Mussel Sampling

April
Part of the job of the Taranaki Regional Council is to monitor shellfish to make sure they are safe to eat.  When we put sewage or waste  in the water without treating it properly, it can affect the shellfish.  If we eat these shellfish we can get sick.
We went to Waitara to collect mussels.
The teams collected  20 mussels from different places.
These will be sent to a laboratory where they will be tested.

We used GPS to make sure we were taking mussels from the same place as the last time they were collected and tested.

We placed the mussels inside two bags so they wouldn't leak.  The bag was labelled so the lab would know where they came from and when they were collected.

Sometimes you may see signs saying not to take the shellfish. These signs are put up after shellfish have been tested and found not to be safe to eat.

Once the problem has been fixed they keep testing the shellfish to make sure they are okay and then they will take the sign down.
